The Materiality of Digital Culture

In our technology-driven world, interactive media and virtual objects have become ingrained in material culture, changing our perception of the tactile experience. Materials seem to be experienced in a synthetic way, and the interaction with materials is no longer exclusively a tactile one, but instead a simulation of the material.

This project explores the intersection of digital culture and materiality in context to graphic design. Digitality, being one of the primary tools of the designer, can challenge the way in which perceive materials. As we continue to question the notions of materiality, and their translation from the physical to the digital space, we ask ourselves how to understand these spaces.

The project looks to initiate a dialogue around our perception of technology and materials, in order to bridge the boundaries between materials and digitality, and contribute to our understanding of new materials in design practices today.

About the designer

I’m Paz, a multidisciplinary designer with passion in typography, motion graphics and publishing. Recently, my work has explored the intersection of technology and materiality through print and motion; using interaction design as a method of challenging traditional notions of materiality, and their translation from the physical to the digital space.
